Summary

As a media server, the FRITZ! box can transmit pictures, music and videos as well as Internet radio stations and podcasts to playback devices or programs in the home network (media streaming). This allows you to access a central media collection from all computers and many other devices in the FRITZ!Box home network (e.g. TV, smartphone, WLAN music system).

Requirements/Restrictions

The playback device or program must support the UPnP-AV (Universal Plug and Play Audio/Video) standard.

Note: All function and setting notes in this manual refer to the current FRITZ!OS of the FRITZ!Box.

Description

Step 1: Set up media server for media collection

  • Disable USB remote connection for USB memory in FRITZ!box

  1. Click on "Home network" in the FRITZ! box user interface.

  2. Click "USB devices" in the "Home network" menu.

  3. Click on the "Remote USB connection" tab. If the tab is not displayed, first activate the Advanced View.

  4. Uncheck the "USB Storage" option.

  5. Click Apply to save the settings.

  • Connect USB memory with media collection to FRITZ!Box

  1. Copy your media collection to a USB memory device (e.g. memory stick, hard disk).

Note: For use with the media server, the USB memory must be formatted with the NTFS, FAT/FAT32 or ext2/ext3/ext4 file system. For file system information, contact the manufacturer.

  2. Connect the USB memory to a USB port of the FRITZ!Box.

  • Activate media server on the FRITZ!Box

  1. Click on "Home network" in the FRITZ! box user interface.

  2. In the "Home network" menu, click on "Media server".

  3. Activate the option "Mediaserver active".

  4. If you want to limit sharing to certain USB memory devices on the FRITZ!Box, select the USB memory device whose media files you want to share
with the media server in the "Media Sources" section.

  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

  • Index media files

  1. Click on "Home network" in the FRITZ! box user interface.

  2. Click "Storage (NAS)" in the "Home Network" menu.

  3. In the "Storage on the FRITZ! box" table, click the "Not created" or "Is created" entry for each storage that contains files.

Indexing is complete when the "is created" entry is displayed for the respective memories. The file index will be automatically updated in the future when
you copy files to http://fritz.nas using an Internet browser. If you copy files to memory with Windows Explorer or other programs, you must update
the file index either through the FRITZ!Box user interface, FRITZ!Fon, or a UPnP-capable player or program (such as VLC media player).

Step 2: Setting up media sources on the Internet

» Only carry out this measure if you use the MagentaCLOUD from Telekom and the media files there are to be provided
 by the FRITZ!Box media server:

  1. Click on "Home network" in the FRITZ! box user interface.

  2. In the "Home network" menu, click on "Media server".

  3. In the "Media sources on the Internet" section, activate the service you are using.

  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings. A window for setting up the media source in the FRITZ! box will now open.

  5. Enter the access data that you have received from the provider in the respective input fields and follow the further instructions.

Note: If you use MagentaCLOUD, you must first set up a MagentaCLOUD WebDAV password. Only with the WebDAV password does Deutsche Telekom allow the FRITZ! box to be registered.

Step 3: Set up Internet radio

» Only perform this action if you want to play Internet radio stations via the FRITZ! box media server:

  1. Click on "Home network" in the FRITZ! box user interface.

  2. In the "Home network" menu, click on "Media server".

  3. Click on the "Internet Radio" tab.

  4. Select a preset radio station from the drop-down list or select the entry "Other Internet radio station..." if the desired station is not in the list.

Note: The preset stations are set up automatically after selection. You can change the following settings later using the "Edit" button.

  5. Enter a name for the radio station in the "Name" input field.

  6. Enter the address of the radio station in the "Internet address" input field.

Note: Links to many Internet radio stations can be found for example on http://www.shoutcast.com. You can copy the addresses of the stations and paste them into the input field using the context menu.

  7. If you have registered more than one FRITZ!Fon on the FRITZ!Box, define on which telephones the radio station is made available.

  8. Click "OK" to save the settings.

➔ Now you can listen to Internet radio stations on your UPnP-compatible players and programs.

Note: You can also listen to the radio stations with a FRITZ!Fon To do this, press the "Menu" key on the telephone and scroll to the menu item "Internet services" > "Internet radio".

Step 4: Set up podcasts

» Only carry out this measure if you want to play podcasts via the FRITZ! box media server:

  1. Click on "Home network" in the FRITZ! box user interface.

  2. In the "Home network" menu, click on "Media server".

  3. Click on the "Podcast" tab.

  4. Select a preset podcast from the drop-down list or select the entry "Other Podcast..." if the desired podcast is not available in the list.

Note: The pre-assigned podcasts are set up automatically after selection. You can change the following settings later by clicking the "Edit" button.

  5. Enter a name for the podcast in the "Name" input field.

  6. In the "Internet address" input box, enter the address of the podcast at which this podcast can be subscribed to on the Internet.

Note: Internet addresses of many podcasts can be found, for example, at http://www.podcast.de. Use the RSS address of the podcasts and copy them into the input field of the FRITZ! box using the context menu.

  7. In the "Retrieval interval" input fields, enter how often the podcast should be updated.

  8. If you are using a FRITZ!Fon and want to be informed automatically about new podcasts on it, activate the option "Automatically signal new podcasts
  on the FRITZ!Fon".

  9. If you have registered several FRITZ!Fon on the FRITZ!Box, you also define on which phones the Podcast should be made available.

  10. Click "OK" to save the settings.

➔ Now you can listen to podcasts on your UPnP-compatible players and programs.

Note: You can also listen to the podcasts with a FRITZ!Fon To do this, press the "Menu" key on the phone and scroll to the menu item
   "Internet services">"Podcasts".
